It is the sister of more commonly used HTTP. FTP is a way for you to take files from your computer and upload them to another computer, usually a web server. Or, it is also a way of downloading files from another computer to yours. An FTP client may connect to an FTP server to manipulate files on that server. So as to download and upload files to an FTP site, you need to connect using special FTP software. On internet you will find both commercial and free FTP software programs , and some browser-based free FTP programs as well.
Information to connect to an FTP site:
- The "server address" or "hostname". This is the network address of the computer you wish to connect to.
- The username and password.These are required to access the specific files on the computer you wish to connect to.
